I enjoyed these tips very much. I’d like to know more about how to actually develop a brand. Do’s and Don’t’s ,etc. I feel like I am going in different directions with my branding and want to know how to refine and be more target specific.

        Angela Hill says:

The first step to developing a brand is to think about who you are and who you want to be, how do you want to be perceived and are your efforts/image/communication in alignment with those objectives, if yes you’re doing great. If no, that’s ok, just go back to the beginning.

As for target specific, remember any branding tactics need to be aligned with branding analysis and strategies – if you’re just trying the “spaghetti method” and throwing stuff out there to see what sticks, you could be spending your time on highly inefficient efforts. Use your personality attributes as a way of measuring if your branding efforts are effective or not. Good luck!

      Carla,
Start by deciding which goals you would like to achieve with your personal brand. Next, design your personal brand, which at the simplest means writing out what your brand should be. Finally, every time you take action, ask yourself if that action matches your personal brand and furthers your brand goals. Tweak and repeat until you achieve your goals or decide to change direction.

I would also add for Carla: What is your vision and your mission? Do you have a determined set of core values for your self personally and professionally? Understanding who you are and who you want to be at the core will allow you to properly brand and market yourself. Goals and branding are great but would be useless without fundamental understanding of you first.

It’s also very important to think about personal branding v company branding.

For example, whilst this site is about personal branding, if you are part of a company then you need to think about the image and brand that you are creating alongside the image and brand that your company already has in place.

Do you want them to complement each other?

Is it ok to be different?

Just little things that make a big difference

Great stuff… My question is what if you are branding for print? That usually has a different flavor. I firmly believe regardless of your marketing/branding vision it should be colorful and have a pulse (yours) the mission is always Black & White. Basically it works in all aspects of marketing sometimes you use one tool more than another. But well thought out tips thanks.

Great set of tips. One I would add is to include SEO as showing up in search and being synonymous with a phrase would be important to online branding as well.

Personal branding is critical to one’s survival, if all one is doing is building the brand of the company and it folds then what. People do business with people but not just anyone at least for very long. So establishing your own personal brand should be a priority.
