Seth - you are so right - engaging in conversation is a skill. Knowing what to say and when to say it can be a life-changing experience, whether it's making a new friend, connecting to your next job or client or finding your tribe. I continue digging in to the topic of communicating in person tomorrow in my PBB blog post. Look forward to your feedback. Nance

For some people, learning to engage in conversation is a skill that needs to be developed. When I was younger, I disparaged "small talk" as insincere and lacking authenticity. I was all about honesty....

As I grew older, I realized that conversation is the mechanism by which we truly make connections (at least first connections) in our culture. LThe give and take between people on a range of subjects allows for evaluation and foundation for intimacy (or, perhaps, a substantive judgment about dislike).

As you noted, Nance, an open and active conversationalist communicates a desire to connect with others - an important signal for those of us who enjoy broadening our circle of friends, acquaintances and business colleagues.

Very nice piece. In the hussle of today in the technology world, often the personal touch is overlooked. Having a meaningful conversation with someone can have a significant affect upon their day and how they feel about themselves.
Couragous conversations, laced with sincere curiosity, unbeatable.
Now go make a difference!
