I completely agree with you! People are throwing around these buzzwords and all it does is make people shun away from what social media really is.

If you go onto Twitter, right now, 9 out of 10 people say that they’re “social media gurus.” What does that even mean? That you know how to friend people on FB or follow them on Twitter. Cmon people…

GREAT callout on the “blogging black hole”, Jun.

What’s also related and problematic is when buzzwords like “social media” and “transparency” and even “personal branding” are tossed around like hollow mantra,s without much action to substantiate them — this is a turnoff for non-bloggers because they see it as a cliquey con game, instead of the powerful personal interactions it can result in.

Hey David, thanks for the comment. It’s very easy to overlook the fact that who you hang out with matters A LOT in society. Building your own personal brand is great, but I think that helping others build theirs, like how Dan does, is even better in terms of building your positive presence in the world.

Jun, I’ve never thought of it this way. I’ve been consistently focusing on developing my own personal brand thati have completely neglected my friends personal brands. How do you find the time to develop yours and your friends?

How much do people really care about the people you hang out with? I guess if your friend is popular, you will indirectly gain in popularity because of him
