I ask you, ma'am, what did brownies ever do to you?

Jesting aside, I like this post. It's entertaining and true. I agree that although it's important to share tips and information in your field, I also think it's important to share some of yourself. I like the small tidbits of personal information- sometimes I like to know that someone is baking brownies. When done correctly, these small bits of information connects you with others. It emphasizes the "personal" in "personal branding"- which is what it's all about.

Nancy, that video was actually very funny.

Your last three tips in the section "Preparation is Key" are very good. Please forgive me, but the rest of your post was the kind of babble you rightly advise people to avoid.

My problem with personal branding is that most of the advice people get on branding is from people who's only brand is personal branding. I'd prefer to hear more from and about real people - not celebrities - that are using the tools of personal branding to advance their career or small business.

I'm a runner. If I want to get better at running, I could hire a coach. But I would never hire someone to teach me how to be a better runner that does not currently run themselves. And I don't need to hire an Olympic caliber coach because I don't aspire to be an Olympian (WAY too old for that). I'd hire someone that has run the streets of my town for years and that has shown others how to run these streets and our local and regional runs better.

You are right about one thing for sure - personal branding needs a reality check.

Thanks!
