Very good, Liz. It also helps if you can get a list of tentative attendees or the actual RSVP list beforehand. Mapping out a strategy of who you would like to get a few minutes with definitely helps clarify your goals.
I really enjoy the knowledge you drop in these posts. Thank you.

@yinka, I actually disagree. I think the MAIN reason for lack of networking success absolutely has to do with not having a clear goal. With a clear goal you will seek out the right events and the right people. Without one, you'll find yourself going to places and speaking to people and wondering why you're there. I like @alyandrea's analogy below.

Setting goals, whether for networking, business or life, isn't easy, but it's well worth the investment to prevent aimless wandering. It starts with asking yourself the question "What do I want?" and putting the time and the thought to figuring that out.

Especially love #2 about Clarifying Your Goals. Not being clear on that alone = missed opportunity, wasted time and money, and missed business. Understanding your goals prior to the event is like going to the Mexican restaurant because you were in the mood for tacos, instead of wondering why you couldn't get your salsa at the Italian restaurant. Its not the restaurant- its YOU:) Looking fwd to part 2!

This is a fantastic introduction, hope we get to read more facts in your subsequent posts. I do n think not having a goal is the reason behind lack of success in networking events. but setting goals sometimes can be hard. Some events are not that clear to set a precise goal like you identified, what should one do?
