Dan, I'm interested in what tools you used to build your new platform. It's gorgous. I especially love the template. Was it created for you or will you share where you purchased it?

Great post. A lot of people starting out feel the same way. Some work through it and realize it's not as hard as it looks while others just don't end up doing anything with it. Your post will hopefully inspire a few people to get back in the game.

Good overview. Even more important is to get your own domain name before setting up your website / blog. It's your online identity and can be used with most of the hosted services you mentioned. And if you're not satisfied with Blogger you can just switch over to Tumblr on your custom domain without losing your personal brand.

There are a many more services such as Posterous, Yola or Weebly that can be used with custom domains. Check out http://iwantmyname.com/features/custom-domain-applications-and-dns for an overview.

Excellent post Dan, one of your best.

You're absolutely right that there exist so many tools now that not being tech-savvy is no longer an excuse for not having an online presence. The great thing about wordpress.com is that it's a relatively easy transition to a self hosted wordpress.org blog.

Also, love your suggestion of hiring a blog consultant to help guide you through the initial steps. Admittedly, as a blog/social media consultant I am a bit biased but just like I wish I hired an accountant and lawyer BEFORE launching my business, I feel many people would have an easier start if they hired a blog consultant before building an online presence.

Anyone looking for help building a blog or starting a social media campaign, feel free to visit my company The 42nd Estate. Mention that you found us via Dan and we'll give you a discount. :-)

One more note, many people probably don't realize they already have an online presence. Whether it's facebook, linkedin or maybe a listing in the White Pages or some other directory, I bet a lot of people would be surprised that their name already appears in Google.

Nice tech recommendations for getting started with a site or blog. Another approach for someone new to the online space (or who is 'tech-intimidated') may be to get acquainted with elance.com, guru.com, or a similar service. Here they can find others to take care of their site design, custom blogs, and other tech needs while they concentrate on their strengths.

Great post Dan. This is valuable information for the web site and blog novice. I will include this post (and many of your others) in my Stanford class this summer.
