Not only must desperation be left out of a job interview, but negativity must also remain absent in an informal conversation at a networking event. The other day, in a small space with three other people, one man kept complaining and complaining about job search difficulties – he was too old, he was too educated, he was too savvy; companies, if they hire at all, only want recent college graduates, etc., etc., etc. – and then asked for business cards and . . . . would we keep him in mind if we heard of an opening he might be interested in? Yeah, right!

The biggest thing I always see is that people sound desperate and are totally unprepared for an interview. That will knock you out of the waters right away!

What Debra mentions are great thoughts to make your mantra. Above all, be calm, composed, and look the most professional possible. Fit into what that company is looking for. What are their current happy employees like? Be like them. Fit THEIR mold and voila- you will be a top candidate.

Need help? I'm The Resume Chick. Google Me!
