Distilling your business service and brand (elevator speech) down to something immediately identifiable is sage advice, especially in my line of work—corporate communications—which is not easily understood or often misunderstood. Thanks.

Great tips! I especially like the one about "do they know what you do?" That is especially important... You contacts/clients need to understand you niche, so they can refer the "right people"... Best, Brian-

Your referability factor still depends on networking effectively. Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, your Web site and all your social networking still depend on relationships based on real life. Personal charisma comes into play when you want to make yourself memorable. You can find image specialists to help you with your clothing and hairstyle, voice and speech coaches to help you become a better speaker. But who will train you to look people in the eye, remember names and be genuinely interested in others? Only you can do that. When it comes down to the wire, your charisma is what serves you as you work a room, appear on a television show or give a presentation to an audience.

@Liz: Being easily reachable is such a valid point and essential to being found and referred in our web 2.0 world. You also have to give people a reason to refer you and make it easy for them. Through creating your own personal website, blog, and having a visible presence on social networks you make it easier for people to find and refer you. With time as your influence builds and you make more connections, you will begin receiving opportunities from WOM referrals and digital referrals.

Great Tips.

Offer a good service, then ask for the referral from happy customers. Sometimes people forget or afraid to ask for the referral, never hurts to ask
