Chad: Great post! I'm an executive recruiter and have been encouraging my candidates to work on establishing their personal brands via social media sites, blogs and blog postings, so they can stand out among their peers. This is a very detailed list of opportunities that could be missed by not establishing your brand and one that I will share with my candidates as well. Thanks for putting it together for us.

Chad, I have never considered the fact that there is other side of not building personal branding. Thanks for this eye opening piece.

@Josh- Great question and thanks for commenting! My biggest tip is to just get started -- the rest seems to take care of itself with time. What I mean is that as you promote your personal brand through your online social networks people will eventually notice your brand without you having to actually tell them -- that's the power of the web!

Go get started and don't let fear hold you back!

Chad,

You have a convincing argument to create a personal brand. Any tips on specifically creating a brand in your workplace without being over the top? I think many young professionals in our generation want to make sure we're recognized, but we don't want to seem like we're starving for the credit.
