Use Personal Branding to Get Ahead at Work

As the market for jobs becomes increasingly competitive it’s important to build your personal brand to differentiate yourself. As the economy stabilizes and eventually recovers employers are going to be very selective in whom they hire. The best jobs are going to go to those with the right amount of experience and ability to communicate their unique value.

Creating your personal brand can help you communicate and promote your unique value to your current or future employers. If done successfully, this can help you stand out from the pack and increase the chances of you getting the promotion or job you want.

Put some lift in your career

1.) Write a blog: A blog is a great way to show your colleagues and superiors your ideas and communicate your unique value. You can use your blog to write about ways to solve challenges, create more revenue, reduce expenses, or do whatever specific tasks within your job role better.

2.) Virtual resume: All of your accomplishments should have a home on your blog or personal website. Make sure your resume is updated and easy to find. If you’ve given presentations that are taped, post the video to your blog as well. Another neat tip is to post a video resume on your site as well. Through using a virtual resume and video of yourself it will allow others to get a real feel for who you are.

3.) Integrate your social networks: Fill out your profile on Linkedin, Facebook, and Twitter. Update your email signature with the links to your blog and social networking profiles. Now as you post to your blog share each post with your social networks. This will definitely get you noticed by colleagues at work and eventually your superiors.

If your not using social networks to connect with the people who have entered your life you could be missing out on some really great opportunities. There are so many people getting on Linkedin, Facebook and Twitter. It’s not just for college kids or teenagers anymore — there is some real value to be had by using social networks. Start connecting now!

Through using these 3 tips you can begin to build some momentum in your career or job search. You can differentiate yourself from the pack and begin to receive some of the opportunities you’ve been looking for.

It all begins through creating your personal brand and then promoting it – go get started!

  1. Of course, it might be helpful to know what your personal brand is, first…. And I didn’t see any mention of maintaining company guidelines…. Of course, I just skimmed the article, and haven’t had my morning coffee yet.

      @Matches- Yes, you must first know what your personal brand is before you can promote it and gain some lift in your career. And if your company has policies against knowledge sharing and social networking they’re behind the times. As long as you’re not using company time to write your blog, or connect on social networks there should not be a problem.

    Personal branding makes you 1) the go-to-person at work for a specific need 2) more productive by fielding a stronger network base 3) more confident in your approach to projects

  5. Good tips, but I’d advise against sharing each post you publish on the social networks. Doing so can annoy your contacts on those sites and lead to them ignoring any posts you make.

    Instead, post only the best posts you publish. If your posts are good enough, other people will post them for you. I would also post other posts you found valuable to show you’re not just self-promoting but are actually trying to share useful information.

    In terms of completing the implementation of your 3 insights, I’m at 2 out of 3. The next critical personal branding to-do — writing my blog. I’ve been diligently reading and studying Me 2.0 on the significance of personal branding, and the insights are invaluable for any age demographic (especially the blogging strategies and tactics) . I know Dan wrote his book with Gen Y as the target beneficiaries, but professionals of ALL AGES should take his and your lessons to heart (as a point of reference — I’m 43 years old).

    As part of my personal branding education, I’m undertaking the to-do of learning FriendFeed during this Memorial Day Weekend. I’m convinced this will take my social network integration to the next level and continue to drive my personal branding momentum and results.

    As of this morning, Google Search Results for “tony faustino” reference me on 80% of both 1st and 2nd Page SERPs. It’s especially gratifying that I “own” the Top 3 results on Page 1. Moreover, a Senior VP in my organization recently recognized my social networking efforts/knowledge in a recent LinkedIn Recommendation.

    I hope you don’t mind me documenting these results, but I do so to emphasize the lessons you and Dan work very hard to evangelize. These economic times are still highly uncertain. However, if people will “walk the walk” and “talk the talk” in their own personal brand development, they can truly hit the ground running when the economy stabilizes.

  8. Chad, another great article! I’m already doing #1, and #3. I will plan to do the virtual resume soon. I also have started adding my linkedin profile link in my work email signature, and it is starting to get attention from my clients and colleagues. Eventually, I would want to add my work blog there as well. I think my company will embrace this idea. I am sort of unique in my organization doing all these extra work, but I know it will be worth all my efforts. Thanks!
