Indeed, in todays uncertainty networking and authentic relationships both with co-workers and with community may be the only real self directed job security there is. Sales solve alot of problems and naturally people are most inclined to do business with those they know, like and trust.
Collaboration, credibility and community are the core of any good business strategy.

Good networking takes place all the time. Not just when one fears being laid off. It takes along time to build a network and a very short time to have it fall down.

Amazing how little value people place on networking in general - they're always "too busy". You have to make it a priority and make the time. If it were a doctor's appointment, they wouldn't flinch from making the time. But, protecting their career? Psshaw!

I've been trying to organize regular networking breakfasts and lunches for financial services professionals in NYC. Nineteen of 90 people opted in, yet I've so far been unable to gain more than 2 people to commit to a date and time (and one of those had to cancel 2 days out). Even with polling them (I don't want to tell you the response rate), people won't invest in themselves, although they claim to be grateful for the opportunity.

I'm tempted to ask for 3 or 4 people out of the group to meet regularly, and let the rest of them fend for themselves until they can commit. Finding the trigger that makes the networking a priority is the sticking point, though. When I figure it out, I'll tell you what I discover.

Liz - Thank you for this thoughtful piece !

Re: "they should have seen it coming and had time to do something about it."

May I also offer that for most it is important NOT to spend too much time dwelling on this truth. Often it takes years to reconcile in our own minds the bad choices we make.

THE important thing is to focus on is the future, and how to navigate what's coming - for this, Liz offers a GREAT list of; to-think's & to-do's !!!
P.S. - Sorry, forgot to tell you great post!
