When Seeking a Job: Love the Product You’re Selling

Career DevelopmentJob Search

No, you don’t have to walk on fire to land a job in today’s economy.  And you will be relieved to know that to secure a good paying job, you don’t have to travel to Sedona and rub crystals under a clear sky when three or more planets are in retrograde and receding through the zodiac.  And it should be comforting to know that to attract the job you want at the pay you deserve, requires following a simple 5-step process.  The take home message of this blog is that if you follow the 5-step process for landing a job, you’ll get a new job quickly and easily; no matter what kind of job market you face.

The 5-step process is: 1) Positive mindset, 2) Meaningful and exciting goals, 3) Powerful self-promotional tools, 4) A well-thought-out, written strategy, and 5) Taking massive action to optimize your tools and strategy to achieve your goals.

Love the product you’re selling

The challenge, of course, is that most people aren’t comfortable with the process of selling or the concept that they have to sell themselves to get a job.  But the reality is that if job seekers are not prepared to sell themselves, they’ll have to be prepared to get outsold.  The good news is that the economy IS improving and there are many jobs and job opportunities available today.  The not-so-good news is that most job seekers simply blend in with each other; and hiring managers can’t distinguish one sheep from the 25+ million lookalikes in the herd of job seekers.  Common sense would dictate that if most job seekers package themselves the same as everyone else, recruiters, HR professionals, and hiring managers won’t have a clue how to differentiate one from the others.

So, the starting point for landing a job at the pay you deserve in today’s challenging job market is to love the product you’re selling (you!). You must love what this product can deliver in terms of results.  You must love the fact that you know exactly what and how you can contribute to an organization’s goals, missions, and bottom line objectives.  You must love the product in such a way as to be able to communicate how you can make a significant, positive difference.

You must not only love the product you are promoting, but believe in it, have confidence in it, and be willing to share this excitement with those who would benefit from you – and the results you can deliver.

3 exciting tips:

1) Blow your own horn loud and clear because if you don’t, no one will hear you.  Make sure your résumé is not a boring, assembly line chronological obituary. No one wants to read your biography. Today’s résumés must be “powerful self-marketing profiles on steroids!”  In 15-20 seconds you must communicate your value and, in an exciting way, share with the reader the results you can produce better than other qualified candidates. (Email me at: jayblock@jayblock.com and I’ll send you a FREE download on how to accomplish this).

2) Have a written Meticulous Action Plan (MAP) that is comprehensive and goal-oriented.  Your plan must include daily job search tasks and daily and weekly goals.  Your plan should also include personal and social activities to ensure you take care of yourself so you can best take care of your job search. (Email me at: jayblock@jayblock.com and I’ll send you a FREE download on how to create a powerful, written MAP).

3) Turn off the negative voices of life and tune into the positive, optimistic voices.  You control who and what you pay attention to.  And know that what and who you pay attention to determines future success.  Listen to, and hang around negative people, books, media, and other voices of destruction, and you’ll destroy any chance of landing a good job quickly.  On the other hand, listen to, and hang around positive people, books, media, and other voices of hope and optimism, and you’ll find that landing the right job quickly is easier than you ever thought possible.
